Some call him "Little Miami," but in addition to sun, sand and surf, it's really nothing like Miami. Then again I've been here in low season.
During high season, I was told, the beaches of Salinas are so jam with people, which is practically every inch of sand filled with towels, umbrella, or body oil-covered comb. The roads are carried by vehicles crossing more clogged with sand fans, and the Malecon is wall to wall with everything from ice cream vendors hawking and masksearrings shark tooth on a stick, fresh grilled prawns.
If you are the last of agoraphobic and then off-season from mid May to December is the time to go to Salinas, Ecuador's most popular Pacific Coast Beach Resort.
About 90 km from Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador, Salinas has long been a tourist destination for Ecuadorians. Glittering skyscrapers along the waterfront condominiums. seafood restaurants and trendy fashion come alive at night. (Also inslow season in the streets at night with young people flocking to see and be seen.)
Unlike Miami, however, is a relatively small city of Salinas. The beach is almost perfectly divided in half by a jetty where you will find the docks of the Yacht Club of Salinas. The sandy bay crescent-shaped on the north side, where the abundance of the action takes place is Salinas Beach. To the south lies Chipipata Beach, quiet and family oriented.
As you might expect, most of the activities here in the middlearound water sports, fishing, whale watching, wake boarding, water skiing, sailing, parachuting, paragliding, surfing, and the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship was held last spring.
Despite the variety of activities, Salinas, however, there may be a less expensive area of the world. A beautiful private room in a nice boutique hotel one block from the Malecon can be had for $ 30/night for a single. A steak or seafood dinner at one oftrendy restaurants, there will again be only $ 5 or $ 6. Or, to fish or shrimp chow, cooked any way you like, locally Mercado over what they eat for about $ 2.50.
And those blocks that I mentioned? I found a new brand, the eighth floor of a floor to ceiling, the magnificent view of Half Moon Bay. With three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a maid quarters, only $ 130,000 in price.
